Fun From Head to Muddy Toe

Love Parks Week brings new adventures to Heartlands with the launch of cycle hire scheme and the chance to win a holiday!

Heartlands is encouraging visitors to go plant and eco wild as part of the national Love Parks week.  On 21-22 July, the 19 acre cultural playground will celebrate the great outdoors with two days of workshops, displays, talks and activities.

The Green Fingers and Muddy Toes event will also see the launch of a new pilot bike hire scheme as Heartlands teams up with Stithians-based, Explorer Cycles to offer half and full day bicycle hire to those wanting to experience the historic countryside around Heartlands on two wheels.

With up to four cycle trails available for varying abilities, it is hoped that such a scheme will encourage local people to become tourists in their own backyard, discovering the World Heritage Site landscape on their doorsteps while getting fit.

Visitors to Green Fingers and Muddy Toes will also get the exclusive chance to win a holiday at Little White Alice, the luxury self-catering eco cottages based in Carnmenellis, by hunting for Alice in the gardens and entering a prize draw.

Also at the event, children can delve into a large inflatable globe to be inspired to help the planet and make their very own wind turbine with eco-gurus, Camp Kernow within the Visitor Centre at Heartlands.

The New Zealand Garden will come to life with den-building and tin can cookery workshops throughout the day and in the South Africa garden, visitors will discover how to make Bee Houses and Solar Masks as well as be able to buy plants and gifts from local suppliers.

Representatives from the RSPB, Cornwall Garden Society, the Orchid Society, Duchy College and Sustrans will also be on hand throughout the day to talk to visitors and show how people can get involved.

The Farmers’ Market will also be at Heartlands on Saturday 21 July, with up to 15 stalls in the Market Square selling fresh local produce including Primrose Herd, Ruby June’s Indian Kitchen, Berrymans Bakery, Oggy Surf Wax and The Café Connection.  The Heartlands’ Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday of every month.

Julie Tripp, Head Gardener at Heartlands said:
“We’ve had so much fun bringing this event together as the organizations we have on board are so passionate about everything they do, from keeping bees to orchids. We hope this passion for looking after the planet rubs off on our visitors and they have a wonderful time with everything we have planned.  There should be some surprises over the weekend too!”

Green Fingers and Muddy Toes is on 21-22 July at Heartlands in Pool from 11am-4pm each day.  Admission to Heartlands is free, but activities and workshops may include a nominal fee.

Explorer Cycle Hire will be available daily over the summer season, but bicycles must be booked half a day in advance.  Routes include South Wheal Frances trail (6 miles), Great Flat Lode trail (8 miles), Tehidy/Portreath Beach trail (10 miles) and The Great Cornish Way (30 miles). Bike hire prices range between £7.00 and £16.00.  Please call Explorer Cycles on 07709835543
